A new e-learning course designed to transform how older Armed Forces veterans are supported across the UK was officially launched on 16 July by Age Cymru Dyfed and Age Cymru at the National Memorial Arboretum.
Developed as part of the ‘Building Stronger Futures for Older Veterans’ project, the training is a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at frontline staff working in the NHS, local authorities, and the voluntary sector. Backed by funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, the three-year project addresses the unique challenges faced by nearly 590,000 veterans aged over 80 living in the UK.
The interactive course, developed in partnership with digital learning specialists Fantom Factory, takes just 30 to 45 minutes to complete and is available in both English and Welsh. Its aim is to ensure professionals are equipped to recognise and respond to the specific needs of older veterans, wherever they are in the UK.
“This training empowers professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older veterans,” said Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Age Cymru Dyfed. “By recognising their service and connecting them to the support networks they deserve, we can reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, and ultimately ease pressure on healthcare services.”
The training focuses on preventative care strategies, such as adding veteran markers to medical records and connecting individuals with community and third-sector services. These steps are expected to reduce hospital readmissions, combat loneliness, and reinforce local support networks.
Veterans who helped shape the course were present at the launch, alongside the development team and project leads. The event underscored a national commitment to honouring the legacy of older veterans by ensuring they receive the tailored care and recognition they’ve earned.
