Age Cymru Response: Energy Support

Published on 16 March 2026 04:36 PM

Age Cymru welcomes today’s announcement from the Prime Minister confirming new support to help people with their energy bills in light of the crisis in the Middle East.

However, we remain deeply concerned for older people on low and fixed incomes, many of whom are already struggling to make ends meet. With around 10% of households in Wales reliant on heating oil, we urge energy companies and the UK Government to ensure that support reaches older people who are most exposed to rising costs.

Victoria Lloyd, Chief Executive at Age Cymru said:

“Today’s announcement from the UK Government provides some reassurance regarding support for rising heating oil and energy costs. For thousands of older people across Wales who rely on heating oil, the sharp increases in price remain a major worry.

We need to see the detail on how this will be delivered, and we are concerned as to whether the funds made available to Wales will meet the challenge, given the number of households affected, many of them headed by older people who are already struggling with ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

“We also need long‑term solutions. No older person should be left cold or unable to afford life’s essentials. Achieving this requires fairer energy prices, properly insulated and energy‑efficient homes, and a financial support system that tackles fuel poverty at its roots.”
