Saint David's Day

Today - 1 March, is Saint David's Day.

Here are as few facts about Saint David and Saint David's Day:

• Saint David, or Dewi Sant - which is his name in Welsh, is the Patron Saint of Wales.
  
• Saint David was born in the sixth century in Capel Non in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
  
• Saint David was the son of Non and father of Sant, who was the son of Ceredig - the King of Ceredigion.   
  
• Saint David was a Christian missionary who travelled extensively across Wales.
  
• Saint David helped spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of Western Britain.
  
• Saint David died in 589 and his body was buried in the grounds of his monastery where St David's Cathedral now stands.
  
• Saint David's Day has been celebrated since 1120.
  
• Saint David was recognised as a national patron saint during the height of Welsh resistance to the Normans.
  
• The flag of St David is a yellow cross against a black background.
  
• It is a custom on St David's Day to wear either a leek or a daffodil, which are both national emblems of Wales.
