Age Cymru secures funding for innovative arts project

Published on 30 July 2014 11:00 AM

Age Cymru has secured funding to lead an arts project in care homes across Wales.

The two-year pilot project is funded by the Baring Foundation and Arts Council for Wales.

Around 23,000 older people in Wales live in care homes, and over half of this number are aged 85 and over, in many cases making their access to the arts extremely limited.

Emma Robinson, Arts and Creativity Development Officer said:

"We're delighted to receive this funding from the Baring Foundation and Arts Council for Wales to run this ground-breaking arts project in care homes.

"Care home residents will experience a variety of different art activities, enhancing their quality of life, with Care Home Managers and staff picking up new skills as they work closely with the artist.

"The artists will also benefit from the project, developing their professional practice and opening up more opportunities to work with older people in the future.

Dr Bernadette Fuge, Chair of Age Cymru, commenting on the partnership project said:

"This project compliments our highly regarded My Home Life Cymru programme, Age Cymru's scheme to promote quality of life in care homes.

"Age Cymru promotes and encourages access by older people to the arts via its much-praised annual Gwanwyn Festival, which takes place around Wales each May.

"We are truly delighted to have been asked by the Arts Council of Wales and the Baring Foundation to deliver this important pilot project."
