Counting the Cost

Counting the cost
Following on from our annual survey, we've taken a closer look at one of the biggest issues older people in Wales tell us they face - the cost of living.
More than half (52%) of older people told us they’ve found the cost of living a challenge this year, up from just 9% in 2020. Fuel is the biggest worry. Of those who told us they were cutting back, more than half are using less energy, and over a third are spending less on food.
Many older people live on fixed incomes, so sudden price rises leave them little room to manoeuvre. Fuel, water and care costs have all risen sharply. People told us how they’re coping: one woman in Wrexham is showering less often to keep her water bill down, and another in Flintshire says she can no longer afford to eat healthily. Cutting back on heating and food puts older people’s health at risk and adds to the pressure on our NHS.
The report looks at four key costs: fuel, water, care and broadband. It asks why they’re rising and sets out what the UK and Welsh Governments can do to help.
