FSA suckers list campaign

Published on 31 May 2012 09:30 AM

Responding to news today that the Financial Services Authority (FSA) is going to be contacting 17,000 older people in Wales to warn them that their details have been found on scam mail 'suckers lists', Age Cymru's Director of Influencing Victoria Lloyd, says:

"We are very glad the FSA is taking assertive action to tackle this very serious problem.

"Scams can cost people thousands of pounds, in fact we have heard of people who have lost tens of thousands of pounds because they have responded to scams.

"Scams can also cost people their independence and confidence and can alienate them from family and friends.

"The people behind these scams use cruel psychological tricks to prey on people using so called ‘suckers lists'.

"If you receive scam mail in the post do not respond to it, bin it.

"Responding to one piece of scam mail can open the flood gates to even more letters and your name being placed on a list."

Age Cymru has teamed up with electricity distribution company WPD to provide a handy fact-packed door hanger which give valuable advice and guidance to help older people to protect themselves from postal and doorstep scams.

It is available from Age Cymru offices and shops and Wilkinson stores across Wales, or by ringing 029 2043 1555.
